World War II Every Day with Army Sizes

Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the very long wait in uploads, however, hopefully you will understand why, as it has taken me almost a year to research and produce this video.
On September 1st, 1939, Germany declares war on Poland and throws the world into the largest conflict humanity has ever seen. I have done my best to do accurate borders, encirclements and army sizes.
If you see any mistakes or inaccuraices, or if you simply just have suggestions, then let me kno in the comments and I will include them in my next video!
Besides, sit back and relax, I hope that you enjoy the video!

Being able to study history with data visualizations like this one makes one thankful for living in this century. Thanks @Christopher!

Wow. Insane. This is fantastic. 3 of my great- grandfathers fought in WW2. My American side (I have a Russian side of the family) great-grandfathers were a cook and a machine-gunner and bomb dropped on the back of the plane. My Russian great-grandfather fought at Stalingrad. Miraculously, all three survived. In their honor, I learned about WW2. Including watching this video.

Seeing the ebb and flow, the victories, defeats, retreats, halting, stalemate, counter offensive, and seeing the changing of territory really shows how bleak the war started and how it shifted towards the favor of the Allie’s. Seeing how thin Germany was stretched, it’s no surprise they lost

This new concept has lots of potential. It gives more insight on how powerful countries actually were. Usually, you only have country sizes, which can easily be deceptive. Of course, there’s still a lot more to it than that.

The king knew he couldn’t hold back Germany. So he didn’t even try. This immediate capitulation functionally allowed him to put Germany in the awkward “victor’s” position where Hitler needs to tout how great it is to accept your new Nazi Overlords. So he can’t go around obviously oppressing everyone. This meant the Danish king could actually sort of protect his people in the long run, instead of what happened to the Poles. There’s a reason almost all Danish Jews survived. Well, there’s a lot of reasons, actually, but one of them was this exact fact.

And there was not such a long arms race than before. Before WWI every european force tried many years the best they can do to have the best military. Then it neutralized each other. Also before the effective tanks, bombers and artillery, MG positions where too powerfull. So the defending always had the advantage, producing stuck frontlines. The neighbour countries hoped really long hitler would just stop and where not as equally prepared for war as germany then before WWI. That would by my assumptions.

The Operation Barbarossa section gives me chills every time. The music, the gigantic numbers, hundreds upon hundreds of thousands encircled. 80% of men born in the USSR in 1922 would be dead by the war's end, and those three months reflect it wholesale. The air raid sirens and general chaos of the music really drive home how barbaric it was.

It's crazy how quickly the germans invaded the western front! It barely lasts 17 seconds (from 1:37 to 1:54), which is merely 2% of the entire video's length. Also it's nice to have included North Africa on the map. The allies were not attacking on the western front because they were already busy reclaiming their colonies down there, crushing the German forces at the South of the USSR, which was in trouble due to Operation Barbarossa. Eventually that allowed them to reach Italy through the Mediterranean sea and take back the west.

It’s terrifying to see how quickly Germany took the majority of Europe. Also, if the Soviets had capitulated (unlikely since they had backup plans if Moscow fell) the the war likely would have been lost. The US were hesitant to get involved and the British simply didn’t have the scale to defend themselves and the oil fields from the power of the Axis, if they had lost either the Axis would have been insurmountable.

I can see why it took you so long. This is a great source material in and of itself. If this could be any more complete, it would perhaps include showing the bombing raids as they happened on Germany, Italy, etc. And perhaps maybe a table of total fatalities for Allies and Axis, military and civilian. But that's nearly impossible. Thanks for producing what might be the best numerically visual representation we'll ever see.

There were also allot of ally occupied territories that were invaded by Japan. (Some of those places kind of welcomed it since it drove out their western occupiers. However, they were pretty brutal in most if not all the places they invaded. It is, after all, an invasion. They are there to conquer and not really to make friends.)

Once Operation Barbarossa failed in late 1941, the writing was on the wall and the war was basically lost for Nazi Germany. The entire German strategy depended on a rapid victory (3 months or so). Given the vast size and logistical issues, there was no way Nazi Germany could have won a protracted war of attrition against the USSR.

Great video but just two issues that caught my attention - North Afrika numbers for the British are waaaay too low in 41. it seems it compared overall Axis strength vs only frontline troops for the Allies. And for Barbarossa again it seems to plot all Axis forced planned to be used for the East vs only immediately used Soviet forces. That is of course understandable but both times create the impression that the Axis were vastly outnumbering the British and Soviets but that wasnt the case. (In the desert at least not after operation compass)

If this can be done so precisely (as WW2 is the most well documented event in all of history) I would like to see one of these videos done like this on the locations and of the people that shant be named, during the events that shant be named; The alleged events that seem to run so parallel to WW2, as it where to the point that the two are absolutely inseparable. There must be enough proof to pull it off; surly there is, I've seen a picture of a pile of shoes, at school, and been reminded literally every single day since. Would be great if it were to start well betimes. That would be wise. Looking around at the world and our nations today - we can at least be thankful we aren't speaking German.. The real surprise for me was how quickly the Soviets replaced their losses during Barbarossa. I knew there was a point when the Germans outnumbered the Soviets by >1M men, but I never realized that the Germans lost this edge before 1941 even ended. That is an insanely short time to put millions of men in the field, especially while retreating and suffering massive casualties. I'd be interested in any good book recommendations about the Soviet mobilization during late 1941.
