I took an elective course on filing taxes in college and realize how many different laws there are. In a country where you can get penalized for filing your taxes wrong I feel like classes like this should be mandatory for HS seniors or college students.

In my senior year in high school, they offered a class to take called financial math. It went over everything in the real world; saving, investing, debt, etc. However they made this optional and then made College prep classes like math and English required to students that didn't pass a college test for college classes.

At my high school they offered a financial literacy course senior year which I think wasnt required. Everyone went step by step how to write a check, file taxes, liquidation and savings, they even had someone come in and explain stock to us and the steps to start trading stock. I think having courses like that is crucial for young adults emerging in this world to understand how money is crucial for their wellbeing, so they're not left making stupid decisions with their money.

I chose Economics and Latin, first of all because I don't enjoy doing science and second of all I feel like they serve me more purpose, especially Economics. I'm learning a lot in Economics and I enjoy the class so much.

My school has a consumer math course they offered and I’m a senior, so I took it. It teaches how to be more financially literate and how to start your life financially on the right step. For example, did you know that our generation shouldn’t depend on social security to pay for a part of our retirement. Only two workers are paying for every one person on social security. What about how to safely use a credit card, or how to search for a car? What about a solid budget and living within your means? I had a chapter about paying taxes and I STILL don’t really get it all the way. How is someone who isn’t taught any of this, going to know? It’s embarrassing! The world runs on money and most of us don’t know the very basics.

@Brandon Macon like sarcasm aside how do you not see how flawed your words are? College isn't supposed to be high school 2.0. College is meant for specialization, the pursuit of a career that either requires a degree to be a part of the industry or requires a degree to grow within that industry. You think someone goes to college because they want to become an engineer, doctor, lawyer, programmer, or any other specialized work or because they want to understand how to improve credit with the credit unions and to have a good financial plan for the next 25 years? College is a privilege, not a given. Don't say foolish stuff before thinking about it first.

I honestly agree with Kevin here. I think high schools should teach a life 101 class. Where you learn to balance a checkbook, change a car tire, cash a check, etc. just the essentials of life in order to get you ready for adulthood. I feel like that would be a major change in teenagers lives. And when they get older they can have an easier time in life. I’m only 18 so having a class like that would have changed my life so much. This is why learning basic skills to prepare yourself for adulthood is so important. I feel like a lot of high schools across this country miss that point.

I had a substitute teacher one time in my U.S. government class that talked about this for about 30 minutes or so. Almost the whole period. He talked about how money had gone up over the years, by the time my generation is out of college gas is probably gonna be 5 bucks a gallon. He talked about how when I’m 60, happy meals are gonna cost 20-35 dollars. He asked who believes there gonna become a millionaire. A couple people raised their hands. After they gave how they are gonna accomplish that, then he started talking to us about interests rates, how much to save each month to become a millionaire by the time we are 65, or the time we retire. He also gave a lot of good advice like once you get money you go right out and spend it. In college when you get money it’s gonna be the same way. Once you get that 10,000 dollars you gonna wanna go buy that new car. No, you don’t. You keep your car until it quits on you. Because saving is what your gonna need for the rest of your life.

When I was in school we got the lesson on pay yourself first and on investing in stocks...for me it was Freshman and Senior year. But it's the old horse to water analogy and at that age you listen to see if it's on an exam and then data dump it if it's not. As youth you're told a lot, but how much do you pay attention at the time.

It’s something that should be integrated when teaching maths, or having a subject called economics.

We don’t even know what a credit card is, or a loan, or interest, we should be taught about finances in general

Traditional school wants young people to be an employee. As a person who was born in a family that is not that 'rich' I can say that I need to work on my financial education because even my parents didn't know anything about financial litteracy.

Average is 52,000 with an extremely high variance and standard deviation. Let me express it better as the average salary is 52,000 but the average person’s salary is much less

That's exactly right and it's disgusting. They taught us girls in 1960s home economics and how to make a damn bundt cake. I should have been in a finance class teaching us how to save money invest money and keep track of our money. I can't believe they still don't have that.
