Everyone went step by step how to write a check, file taxes, liquidation and savings, they even had someone come in and explain stock to us and the steps to start trading stock. My school has a consumer math course they offered and I’m a senior, so I took it. It teaches how to be more financially literate and how to start your life financially on the right step. For example, did you know that our generation shouldn’t depend on social security to pay for a part of our retirement. Only two workers are paying for every one person on social security. What about how to safely use a credit card, or how to search for a car? What about a solid budget and living within your means? I had a chapter about paying taxes and I STILL don’t really get it all the way. How is someone who isn’t taught any of this, going to know? It’s embarrassing! The world runs on money and most of us don’t know the very basics.

@Brandon Macon like sarcasm aside how do you not see how flawed your words are? College isn't supposed to be high school 2.0. College is meant for specialization, the pursuit of a career that either requires a degree to be a part of the industry or requires a degree to grow within that industry. You think someone goes to college because they want to become an engineer, doctor, lawyer, programmer, or any other specialized work or because they want to understand how to improve credit with the credit unions and to have a good financial plan for the next 25 years? College is a privilege, not a given. Don't say foolish stuff before thinking about it first.
Budo the Paladin
Před 3 měsíci
@Brandon Macon oh yes of course where only around 37 to 42% of the American public has degrees, meaning a majority of the US doesn't attend and finish college, we should put important lessons about finances there. Then, we'll only have a little over a third of the country who understand, bravo truly amazing input! Now that I pretended your words are intelligent, you can move on with your day while the adults get real, thanks kiddo.

I honestly agree with Kevin here. I think high schools should teach a life 101 class. Where you learn to balance a checkbook, change a car tire, cash a check, etc. just the essentials of life in order to get you ready for adulthood. I feel like that would be a major change in teenagers lives. And when they get older they can have an easier time in life. I’m only 18 so having a class like that would have changed my life so much. This is why learning basic skills to prepare yourself for adulthood is so important. I feel like a lot of high schools across this country miss that point.

I had a substitute teacher one time in my U.S. government class that talked about this for about 30 minutes or so. Almost the whole period. He talked about how money had gone up over the years, by the time my generation is out of college gas is probably gonna be 5 bucks a gallon. He talked about how when I’m 60, happy meals are gonna cost 20-35 dollars. He asked who believes there gonna become a millionaire. A couple people raised their hands. After they gave how they are gonna accomplish that, then he started talking to us about interests rates, how much to save each month to become a millionaire by the time we are 65, or the time we retire. He also gave a lot of good advice like once you get money you go right out and spend it. In college when you get money it’s gonna be the same way. Once you get that 10,000 dollars you gonna wanna go buy that new car. No, you don’t. You keep your car until it quits on you. Because saving is what your gonna need for the rest of your life.

I'm 15 years old nearly 16 and I live in Spain, here when you start your last year of secondary school 4° ESO (10th grade for the Americans, year 11 for the British) you have the option to choose between Biology or Economics and you also have the option to choose between Physics & Chemistry or Latin. I chose Economics and Latin, first of all because I don't enjoy doing science and second of all I feel like they serve me more purpose, especially Economics. I'm learning a lot in Economics and I enjoy the class so much.

Move to somewhere cheaper. That's what I did. Buy a cheap car and drive to work. Wake up early if you have to. Struggle now so you don't when you're 60.

INVESTING means COMPOUND INTEREST. The average investment account gets 7-8% annually in returns. That's 364-416 annually in investment returns the next year if you do it again you get 728-832 and again and again and again if you invest consistently. The thing is most people can't delay gratification. So you're wrong.
