Starship | SN15 | High-Altitude Flight Test

As early as Wednesday, May 5, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 15 (SN15) - our fifth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. SN15 has vehicle improvements across structures, avionics and software, and the engines that will allow more speed and efficiency throughout production and flight: specifically, a new enhanced avionics suite, updated propellant architecture in the aft skirt, and a new Raptor engine design and configuration.

Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN15 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 km in altitude. SN15 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN15’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

Given the dynamic schedule of development testing, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward SpaceX’s fifth high-altitude flight test of Starship!

The fact that we went from the Falcon 1 to this is just astounding. Less than 2 decades and SpaceX has went from a tiny little startup to a giant in the aerospace industry, paving the way for reusable rockets, and restoring US capability to launch humans to the ISS. Looking back at the failed Falcon 1 launches in the mid 2000s, no one would’ve guessed that this would be where SpaceX would be in 15 years. Super excited to see orbital starship tests!

@TimePro Hope they work out a "Safe" solution. I'm speculating it's going to take much longer to produce a "Safe" system that will not risk the lives of the Astronauts/passengers the way they are going at it. Using the type of landing platform I proposed will reduce the risk, and simplify the system, be more practical, and speed up re-usability. The Starship "Shell" is just not sturdy enough to repeatedly land without constant worry of structural fatigue. Put it simply it's stupid, that's why they are resorting to splashing down SN20 and the booster.... That will not go away until they either reinforce the shell or make the Starship stumpier ( preferably wider, 20m diameter does not sound too crazy ( would be a good solution for spinning it around the center and creating artificial gravity when in Zero-G). Stumpier Starship has a few advantages...not as sexy though!

Someone must make John Searl meet Elon Musk. Those two are the key. These two have the technology and the means to make it happen. If Elon Musk introduces John Searls technology, we can make this happen. I’ve analyzed John Searls technology and I really do believe he is the key.

Not saying its a bad idea, but John Searl is 89 years old. Sure he developed fuel-free power generators (But solar panels and thermoelectric generators exist too) Also read something about anti-gravity, but it did not go into detail at all. Please link me up with something that further explains the anti-gravity part. Other wise, Pretty sure Elon does not need this (rather interesting) person.

@Kim Rockets are actually pretty safe for the environment. Solid rocket boosters are polluting, but liquid ones are pretty safe. And spaceX only uses liquid rockets. It's industries and automotives that we have to worry about. But Tesla is handling it also. Because even the least efficient electric car is more environment friendly than the most efficient gasoline car. (Already proven) And musk is doing good by reusing rockets, thus decreasing the resources they use. I don't see the problem.

@Starboy 101 The US military spends almost a TRILLION dollars every year, and NASA spends maybe a few billion a year. Now 50 million dollars to launch a falcon 9 is a lot of money, and SpaceX are developing a rocket that will be able to launch 4 times the mass that falcon 9 can launch, and still hopefully being 25 time cheaper to launch. Remember the Saturn V? That cost about a billion dollars to launch, and SpaceX is making a rocket that can to pretty much the same as the Saturn V and yet be only 2 million dollars to launch. So no, its not a complete waste of money.

    • Starboy 101

      Starboy 101

      Před 14 dny

It is far from a waste of money. In the pursuit of space exploration, we have developed numerous technologies that have benefitted humans on earth in countless ways (IE: surgical robots) And using space based technology, we can accurately track the progress of human driven climate change. Besides, by colonizing other planets, we can create a backup in case earth is rendered uninhabitable via some sort of disaster, safeguarding the future of the human race. And if you’re worried about cost, remember, nasa is less that 0.5 percent of the us government’s budget, so they would be better off taking some off the military, NASA also actually makes a profit, so the whole “waste of money” thing is irrelevant.

❤️❤️ ☮️ Going to mars is not just about all positivity Imagine taking a mankind at its worst too, all the bloodshed, pain, hate, crimes, injustice, wars, jealousy, etc to another planet. We have already messed up the earth, is mars next? Plz let the universe alone. Mars is so beautiful on its own.. it dont deserve us.. either make mars peaceful or else let humanity keep our dirty self here on this earth.. its not about making humanity a multiplanet species, its about making love a multiplanet virtue. ❤️❤️ ☮️

Starship uses methane and liquid oxygen (CH4 and O2), when you burn them together they make carbon dioxide and water vapor, SpaceX uses the Sabatier process to convert the carbon dioxide and water vapor (CO2 and H2O) into rocket fuel again (CH4 and O2). Sure it does produce some trace gases like NOx that's created by the high temperatures of rocket exhausts making the nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere to react, you could try to separate it back into nitrogen and oxygen but it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Human planetary colonization creates a safeguard for the future of the human race, in the quite likely possibility of a beyond control threat to our planet’s habitability. So, by your logic, a few acres of wildlife habitat in south Texas is more important then the future of the human race. Also, the technologies created in pursuit of space exploration have already helped people back on earth in countless ways. (IE: surgical robots, satellites that monitor climate change), so the payoff is immense compared to the investment in land and resources.
